Khaled Hosseini, the brilliant writer he is, weaves his story in such a way that you are captivated and begin to believe that it is yours. In each of his works I have read, be it The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, or And The Mountains Echoed; each character has a voice of its own.
Here are some quotes from his books that spoke to me the most as a young woman.

One of his quotes, most women can relate to not only young women. Beauty is a construct upon which women are constantly judged, and it is not even in our hands. We don’t control and we can’t control how we look. It’s a very stupid expectation to be able to control how we look and be disappointed when that doesn’t happen.

We often have to choose whether we want to live in the past or move forward. To do this, we must look to the future.

This statement reflects the situation often faced by young women. Our education is taken for granted and we are supposed to depend on our partners.

She went from a child who had the freedom to pursue her dreams, to a woman who had no freedom and had to marry an married man much elder to her. However, at the end of the story, Laila moves on in her life, hoping for a better future.

Written at the beginning of the book The Mountains Echoed, this quote set the mood for the entire book. It resonates with me that by being selfish, we do nothing wrong. The choices we make sometimes go beyond the whole construct of right and wrong. Feeling guilty of hurting someone is not the only option.
Priyanka Chopra’s character Ayesha in Dil Dhadakne Do, decided to divorce her husband although her family was against her decision, but she had to go through with it, to find her own happiness.
Hosseini as an author writes stories that are sad and sometimes even make me cry, but that’s the beauty of his writing, we invest so much and get back even more.
